About Marathon Ethiopian Restaurant: A Taste of Ethiopia in the Heart of London

Welcome to Marathon Ethiopian Restaurant, where every meal is a celebration of community, flavour, and ancient tradition. We are more than just a restaurant; we are a gateway to the rich culinary heritage of Ethiopia, nestled in the vibrant tapestry of London.

Our Story: From the Highlands to London

Our name, “Marathon,” is a story in itself. It is a tribute to the legendary long-distance runners of the Ethiopian highlands, whose strength, endurance, and grace are known throughout the world. We strive to embody these qualities in our cooking—using traditional methods, slow-simmering our spicy wots (stews), and meticulously preparing each dish with passion and perseverance.

Founded in 2004, Marathon was born from a simple dream: to share the authentic, soul-warming taste of home with our neighbours in London. What began as a family’s passion project has grown into a beloved culinary destination, thanks to the Londoners and adventurers who have embraced our food and become part of our story.

The Heart of Ethiopian Dining: Injera and Community

Dining at Marathon is a unique experience. At the centre of your meal is injera, a soft, spongy flatbread with a slight tang, made from the ancient grain teff. This is more than just bread; it is your plate and your utensil. Our dishes are served atop this injera, and you eat by tearing off pieces to scoop up the delicious stews and salads.

This way of eating is deeply symbolic. It represents community, togetherness, and sharing. We invite you to gather around a shared platter, connect with your friends and family, and experience a meal that engages all your senses.

Our Culinary Philosophy

We believe in honouring tradition. Our recipes have been passed down through generations, using a sacred blend of spices like berbere (a complex chilli spice blend) and mitmita (a fiery pepper powder). We take pride in offering an extensive array of vegetarian and vegan dishes, making Ethiopian cuisine a perfect choice for everyone.

From the iconic Doro Wot (a rich chicken stew with hard-boiled eggs) to the hearty Key Sir Alicha (beetroot and potato stew) and the robust Yebeg Tibs (sautéed lamb), every dish tells a story of Ethiopia’s diverse landscapes and cultures.

And no journey is complete without our traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. We roast green coffee beans right before your eyes, filling the air with an aromatic fragrance, before brewing a potent and unforgettable cup—the perfect end to your feast.
